Lot number 72
Hammer value £17,800
Description Alfa Romeo GT1300 Junior
Registration YFH 4H
Year 1970
Colour Red
Engine size 1,290 cc
Chassis No. AR1292970
Engine No. 56765

Launched in 1963, the 105 Series Giulia GT Coupe was the long-awaited replacement for the gorgeous but dated 101 Series Giulietta Sprint. It was styled in just two months by a virtually unknown 22-year-old who worked on it in the evenings during his national service. That man was Giorgetto Giugiaro, on contract to Bertone, who went on to become one of the most famous car designers of all time. Rightly regarded as an all-time classic, the Giulia Coupe was to remain in production very little altered until 1977.

The underpinnings were taken straight from the recently introduced 105 Series Giulia Ti saloon, sharing the same five-speed manual gearbox, independent front suspension, coil-sprung live rear axle and all round disc brakes. The GT 1300 Junior was launched in 1966 and was powered by Alfa’s wonderfully sweet and high-revving 1,290cc twin cam engine which produced 89bhp, sufficient for a top speed of 100mph and 0-60 in 12.5 seconds. Overall it made for a delightful package that offered a seductive blend of performance, handling and style.

First registered in May 1970, this particular GT 1300 Junior is a truly remarkable car that has had just one owner from new and has only covered a mere 11,200 miles to date. Only used in the dry summer months and stored in near perfect conditions, the car is in amazingly sound and original condition throughout, looking virtually as fresh as it must have done when it first left the showroom 42 years ago.

A desirable 'step-front' model, it was supplied new by Mynd House Motors of Gloucester and still retains all its original handbooks. All the factory-applied stickers in the engine bay and boot are still present and the rear seats still wear their original plastic seat covers. The front seats have been protected from new with sheepskin covers and are also in near perfect condition. Even the Pirelli tyres are original and will of course need replacing before the car is put back into use.

The car was last MOTd and on the road in 1993 but was regularly started, moved and polished until about five years ago when the owner died. Since then it has sat under blankets in a dry garage and remained undisturbed until we pulled it out of storage at the beginning of August. Although it still rolls freely it has not been started or run for five years and will now need thoroughly recommissioning before use. It comes with the aforementioned handbooks, two sets of keys, a Radiomobile instruction manual, the original green log book and two old MOT certificates from 1991-1993.

This is an extraordinary find, in stunning time warp condition, that any Alfa enthusiast would feel privileged to own.

AMENDMENT: On close inspection by an Alfa expert this car may have had some remedial work to the lower wings which has been done to a high standard.
